"Elixir is Reuben Winter's first outing on Cosmic Compositions under his Totems recording and performance alias. Utilizing a set of influences ripped from classic jungle drum & bass YouTube channels, nights spent attending dubstep and L.A beats parties in Auckland, and grainy low-res downloads of syrupy Houston screw mixes and low-slung Atlanta trap rap, it's his most confident, cohesive and engaging body of work to date.
The introductory track 'Echolocate' is a study in early 2000s eskibeat collapsing into cinematic synth-composition majesty. It's follow-up 'Black Angel', pure jump-up jungle with ascendant UK Garage/2-step flourishes. In a similar shift of dynamic, 'Marc Ferrari' blends southern rap elements with an up-tempo beat collage, setting things up for a vintage hardcore acid jungle style rollercoaster ride throughout 'Murk'.
After atmospheric interlude 'Elegy', 'Codex', 'The Castellan' and 'Mikami' continue the throwback jungle theme, crispy breakbeats and rave stabs giving way to gurgling snap rap era breakdowns and the odd dose of jazzy keyboard chords. 'Aquarium' closes the album out with a display of hulking film score heft, closing the album out with a contemplative emotional weight. At just under half an hour long, Elixir is the perfect record to listen to on loop. You'll hear more within the songs with every play." ~ Martyn William Pepperell
